Fund established in memory of student

by Elizabeth Omara-Otunnu - October 30, 2006

Kyunga (Katie) Bu, a senior from Orange, died Oct. 22 at Hartford Hospital. She was 20.

Bu was pursuing a dual degree in environmental science and natural resources management.

A resident of Eddy Hall, she was a member of the singing group A Minor, and active in the Asian American Cultural Center.

The Katie Bu Memorial Fund has been established in Bu's memory.

The fund will support undergraduates who are working on degrees and conducting research in environmental science.

When Bu applied to the Honors Program, she wrote, "Today, mankind faces severe challenges in effective management of natural resources as well as restoring stability of natural processes. It needs strong, educated environmental minds that can awaken the public, develop solutions to existing problems, and prevent further destruction in the future."

The fund will support those students who share Bu's vision for an informed public who are committed to a healthy and sustainable environment.

Checks should be made payable to The UConn Foundation, Inc. and sent to 2390 Alumni Drive Unit 3206, Storrs CT, 06269-3206.
