Toy collection for families of troops to take place on campus Dec. 5-16

- December 5, 2005

A holiday toy drive will be held at the Storrs campus from Dec. 5 through Dec. 16. All toys and other items collected will be donated to Operation Elf, a charity hosted by Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s office, in support of deployed Connecticut troops and their families.

“Even if you don’t support the war, please support the troops and their families,” says Janet Freniere, transportation services administrator, who is coordinating the drive. “Last year we collected over 650 toys, including 13 brand new bicycles. I’d like nothing more than to beat that total this year.”

The drive will collect new, unwrapped toys for all ages. Toys for “older” children (eight years and up) – such as jigsaw puzzles, nail polish sets, art sets, jewelry kits, model cars and airplanes, books, CDs, etc. – are particularly welcome, as there are generally fewer items donated for this age group. Batteries should be included with any toys or games that require them.

In addition to toys, grocery and department store gift cards and international phone cards are also sought, as well as items that can be sent to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Examples of items suitable for the troops are: beef jerky, hard candies, wet wipes, travel-size items, books, magazines, socks, sunscreen, lip balm, DVDs, and CDs.

University Mail Services will pick up any donated items left with outgoing mail between Dec. 5 and Dec. 16.

A decorated UConn shuttle bus or well-marked van will accept donations at the following sites: on Dec. 12, 14, and 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the vicinity of the UConn Co-op, either on Hillside Road directly across from the Co-op, or on Stadium Road outside People’s Bank; and on Dec. 13 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Glenbrook Road, just west of Health Services.

Donations will also be accepted at Transportation Services (on the west side of Central Warehouse, behind the Police Station) from Dec. 12 through Dec. 16 between 7 a.m. and midnight Monday through Thursday, and between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Freniere at 860-486-4804.
