Ride to Raise Awareness of Campus Bicycling Plan Do you like to bike, and wish it was easier to ride a bicycle at UConn? Come to a bike ride in support of a campus bicycle plan on Thursday, April 14, beginning at 11 a.m. The rain date is Friday, April 15. The route will start from the parking lot of the Polo Arena on Horsebarn Hill Road and loop around campus. The ride will take less than 30 minutes. Maps of the route will be available at the starting point, and the route will be clearly marked. The bike ride is intended to increase awareness of bicycling at UConn as a viable, healthy, and clean transportation alternative that would reduce emissions from the use of cars and other vehicles, and to show support for expanding bicycling facilities at UConn. Based on a campus survey conducted last fall, with more than 2,100 responses, the UConn chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the EcoHusky Student Group, and the Office of Environmental Policy have developed recommendations for a campus bicycle plan that includes bike lanes, expanded bike racks, and other amenities to make bicycling at UConn easier. Free bicycle tune-ups and refreshments will be available on-site on Thursday morning. A number of prizes donated by local bike shops will be raffled off, including a helmet, biking jerseys, T-shirts, and repair work. No participation fee or registration is required. Non-UConn students and friends are also encouraged to attend. For more information, visit the UConn Bike Plan webpage at http://www.ecohusky.uconn.edu/CampusBikePlan.htm. |
