Festival On The Green September 18
To Offer Food, Fun, Entertainment

Come join the festivities during Celebrate Mansfield Day on Saturday, September 18.

The day includes the "Festival on the Green," organized by the Mansfield Downtown Partnership Inc., and the 18th annual Know Your Town Fair.

"Festival on the Green" is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. in the parking lots of the businesses located in Storrs Center (the complexes along Route 195/Storrs Road across from E.O. Smith High School and along Dog Lane). The rain date will be September 19 at the same time.

The Festival will be an event for all ages. Food, family entertainment, local art, and children's games will abound in the area soon to become the "town green."

It will highlight Mansfield-area restaurants, artists, and bands, and the local businesses located in the Storrs commercial area on Route 195. A tykes, trikes, and bikes parade with music, a car show in the E.O. Smith High School parking lot, stages with a variety of music, an inflatable "moonwalk" for kids, and a pie judging contest are just a few of the events scheduled. UConn's turf program will bring turf for the occasion; the William Benton Museum of Art will offer a hands-on art project; and representatives of the Student Union Board of Governors (SUBOG) will sponsor a stall. Members of the University's fraternities and sororities will help out as volunteers, and students from the pep band will take part in the parade.

The Festival will be a kick-off event for the future development of Storrs Center, which will include a town green; additional commercial businesses, including restaurants and retail; and housing. The day's activities will, in part, suggest what might be possible in the public spaces of a downtown development. The Festival is expected to be a yearly event that will in the future be held on the new town green.

The community is invited to participate in the parade, as well as the pie judging contest. The parade will assemble at 1:30 p.m. behind the UConn Physical Therapy Clinic/former Fleet Bank building, at 14 Dog Lane, and proceed to the Festival area. For those who love to bake, the Mansfield Agriculture Committee is sponsoring an apple pie judging contest. Bring your best pie to the Festival with apples from orchards in either Windham or Tolland counties. Pies must be brought to the Festival by 2:30 pm. Judges will sample the fare and award the top five prizes.

The Know Your Town Fair will take place at the Mansfield Community Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
