Group To Discuss Downtown Plans September 8 In April, a team of architects, investors, and planners, known as the Storrs Center Alliance, was assigned to the Mansfield Downtown Partnership to develop a plan to transform about 35 acres of land off Route 195 into a hub of retail, cultural, and residential activity. Next week, the people of Mansfield will have an opportunity to meet them. The Storrs Center Alliance team includes several Connecticut firms that are recognized leaders in responsible community planning. These include the architectural firm of Herbert S. Newman and Partners of New Haven; the engineering firm BL Companies of Meriden; and Robinson & Cole, a Hartford law firm. Environmental specialist Michael Klemens, a UConn graduate and Connecticut resident, and Max Reim, vice president of The Village People, a group of retail specialists from Montreal, Canada, are also part of the team. After the team has been introduced, there will be presentations on the principles that define the main streets of New England and their relation to university life. Speakers will also address the need to develop Storrs Center within ecologically sound guidelines. A question-and-answer session will follow. Speakers during the Sept. 8 event will include architect Herbert Newman; Reim; and Steve Maun, president of LeylandAlliance. The event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bishop Center, Room 7.
