Activities and Achievements: Newsmakers

Newsmakers is a selection of UConn people and programs in the media. Most of the stories were placed by communications staff at the main campus and at the Health Center.

Dr. Peter Albertsen, Urology, was quoted in Newsweek and MSNBC.com on June 25, and interviewed by WVIT-TV30 on June 13 about prostate cancer.

Larry Armstrong, Kinesiology, shared advice on exercising and hydration in the Aug. 12 edition of The Washington Post.

Peter Auster, National Undersea Research Center, was interviewed about his research mission probing the seamounts off the New England coast for stories that appeared in Newsday on July 13 and July 27.

Ivar Babb, National Undersea Research Center, was interviewed about the technical role of his crew and the R/V Connecticut in the exploration of the lightship LV-51 in Long Island Sound for a story ran on WFSB-TV3 in a two-part series and in the New Haven Register in late March. UConn's role was also mentioned in a New York Times article on April 20.

Preston Britner, Family Studies, was quoted in a story on foster care in the Aug. 20 Waterbury Republic American.

On July 21, Newsweek magazine quoted Douglas Casa, Kinesiology, for a story on new heat and hydration guidelines for athletes. A similar story also ran in The Wall Street Journal on July 7. UPI and CBS Radio Network ran stories on June 26, and throughout July, stories appeared in several dozen newspapers and radio stations across the country including, The Providence Journal, Detroit Free Press, Associated Press, and the Knight Ridder News Service. Casa, Larry Armstrong, Kinesiology, and football coach Randy Edsall, were interviewed about their NCAA-funded study looking at the effects of heat and hydration on football players. The story ran in USA Today, the Associated Press, The Hartford Courant, Los Angeles Times, The Miami Herald and dozens of other newspapers and TV stations across the country, including CBS news.

Sylvain DeGuise, Pathobiology, was interviewed about his research probing the effects of insecticides on lobsters. The story ran in The Providence Journal on July 22.

Cameron Faustman and Charles Hatton, Animal Science, were quoted in print, radio, and television stories about UConn Dairy Bar ice cream being distributed to grocery stores across Connecticut. Stories ran in The New York Times, The Hartford Courant, Stamford Advocate, and The Day (New London); and on WNPR's Faith Middleton Show, WTIC Radio with Ray and Diane, and Janet Peckinpaugh's Morning Show on WVIT-TV30.

Richard French, Pathobiology, was interviewed by The Washington Times on Aug. 6 for an article about pesticides used to battle West Nile Virus and their effects on lobsters.

In the June 16 issue of Newsweek magazine, William Kraemer, Kinesiology, was interviewed for an article on strength training. On May 13, he was quoted in a Washington Post fitness column about the benefits of increasing exercise intensity. And he was interviewed by the Associated Press on April 7 for an article advising beginners on the proper regimen for weight lifting. The story also ran in Newsday, The Coloradan, and The Times Daily.

Dr. Henry Kranzler, Psychiatry, was quoted extensively in connection with his research on taste perceptions and risk for alcoholism in The Hartford Courant, the BBC, and Scientific American, as well as in other newspapers and television stations around the country.

Richard Langlois, Economics, was the focus of a June 19 article in The New York Times regarding the demise of vertical integration, the practice of corporations servicing themselves by owning companies that produce the services and products they need.

For a story that aired on April 22 on NBC-TV30, Jane O'Donnell, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, explained how insects are friends, not always our foes.

Dr. Karen Prestwood, Center on Aging, was featured in a variety of media about her work published in the Aug. 27 issue of JAMA on the effectiveness of very low dose estrogen for bone retention. Media included USA Today, CBS radio network, WVIT-TV30, The Hartford Courant, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, ABC online, Reuters, WBAL radio (Baltimore), drkoop.com, Yahoo news, Bloomberg News, and Good Housekeeping Daily Health Headlines.

On April 24, the Connecticut Global Fuel Cell Center was highlighted in CPTV's documentary, "Connecticut's Energy Future". Nigel Sammes, center director, and Joseph Helble and James Fenton, Chemical Engineering, were interviewed.

Eugene Santos, Computer Science & Engineering, was interviewed by The Day (New London) on May 12 for a story about stopping SPAM via Internet e-mail.

Dr. John Shanley, Infectious Diseases, discussed the emergence of new viruses like SARS with Radio Health Journal, in a piece that aired on 340 radio stations around the country in May.

Dr. Pamela Taxel, Endocrinology/Medicine, was featured in articles about men and osteoporosis in the Arizona Republic on Aug. 5; Iowa City Press-Citizen on Aug. 4; Pensacola News Journal, Fla. on Aug. 3; Statesman Journal, Salem, Ore. and drkoop.com on July 29,.

On the front page of the May 25 issue of the New York Times, Robert Whitlatch and James Kremer, Marine Sciences, were interviewed for the first in a series of articles about Long Island Sound.

Stephen Wikel, Center for Microbial Pathogenesis, was interviewed about ticks and Lyme disease on WVIT-TV30, a May 20 New York Times article on May 20, and a June 2 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article.
