A Piece of UConn History/Photo: Ice Clearing - 1920s

Clearing the ice on the Duck Pond in the 1920s.

Picture From The Past - A view of Swan Lake in the 1920s shows students and staff clearing snow from the ice to make way for hockey practice and ice skating. Ice polo began as a sport on campus around 1890, but was replaced by the Canadian-developed sport of ice hockey around 1900. Helping to clear the ice is Roy J. Guyer, fourth from left, athletic director from 1919 to 1936, who at various times served as basketball, football, baseball, and soccer coach.

A detail closeup from the photograph shows Guyer, now third from left with glasses and a knit cap, with students in class beanies.
