Graduate Student Found Dead in Apartment

Matthew F. Sims, a 25-year-old graduate student from Johnson City, Tenn., was found dead in his off-campus residence at Knollwood Apartments last Monday night.

Sims, who enrolled this semester in the African studies program, earned a bachelor's degree in religion and spirituality from Bennington College in Vermont in 1998. Prior to becoming a graduate student, he worked with World Teach in Namibia and with a community health project in Gambia.

Counseling support is being provided to the student who found him and to others affected by the loss. "The University community extends sincere and heartfelt condolences to Matthew's family, friends and loved ones," said Vicky Triponey, vice chancellor for student affairs.

The medical examiner's office will determine the official cause of death but, according to police, there is "no indication of any criminal aspect in this death."
