Women's Center Committee
Seeks to Promote Diversity

A two-year-old Women's Center sub-committee hopes to promote and enhance the center's commitment to cultural diversity and make women of color feel more welcome on campus.

The Women's Center Advisory Board formed the Diversity Committee in September 1999 as a result of the center's strategic planning, says Kathleen Holgerson, director of the center. The committee is tasked with drafting a checklist to consult before developing Women's Center programming or services that address the issue of diversity, and sponsoring an annual event to bring together and recognize women of color.

The committee has sponsored three luncheons for women of color since 1999. Last month's was attended by about 50 staff and faculty.

The committee is currently working on a resource guide for women of color and planning the second Women of Color Recognition Banquet to be held in May 2002.

The committee's nine members, representing a variety of campus departments, meet monthly. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12 in the Women's Center lounge. Anyone interested in attending should contact Maria Martinez, committee chair, at (860) 486-4040.
