31-Year Employee Elected to Board of
Trustees
Philip Barry '54 has been elected by alumni to serve a four-year term on the Board of Trustees. Barry, who defeated Dan Blume '53 of West Hartford, worked as associate director of athletics from 1956 until his retirement in 1987, and has had a long history of service to the University and the Alumni Association. "I am thrilled to be selected by the UConn alumni to represent them on the Board of Trustees," Barry said. "I hope my 31 years of employment in the Division of Athletics and many years of service to the alumni association will be of some value to the Board of Trustees." Barry will attend his first meeting on Sept. 26. Barry, who was awarded the Distinguished Service to the University Award in 1987, also received the Alumni Association's Albert N. Jorgensen Award for University Service in 1989, the UConn Club Outstanding Contribution Award in 1990, and the UConn Alumni Service Award in 1994. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association, the Alumni Council, the Centennial Alumni House Committee, the Faculty Excellence Awards Committee, and as the Alumni Association representative to the UConn Club, among other service activities. A resident of Mansfield, Barry served on the Town Council for four years, and has been a member of the Mansfield-UConn Town/Gown Committee for more than 11 years. He was the town's liaison with the UConn Board of Trustees for four years, beginning in 1995. He has served as president of the College Athletic Business Managers, treasurer of the Big East conference, and in 1975 was recognized as Athletic Business Manager of the Year. Barry replaces Louise Berry, who served two four-year terms, the maximum allowed by state statute. Karen A. Grava |
