Farwell Barn to Receive Winter Weather Protection

The Farwell Barn on Route 195 soon will have a tarp over its roof to protect it, while the University seeks an architect to design renovations that will preserve the barn.

Karla Fox, associate vice chancellor for university affairs, said $250,000 has been set aside for the renovations, and that an architect will be selected soon.

MCC Construction Corp. of Storrs will install the tarp sometime this month.

The red barn, built in the early 1900s, is one of several agricultural buildings that mark the entrance to campus on Route 195 in the Horsebarn Hill area. The tarp will protect the barn, also known as the Jacobson Barn, from rain and snow this winter. Renovations are expected to begin next spring.

Funding for the project will come from deferred maintenance funds that are part of UConn 2000, the $1 billion program to renew, enhance and renovate the University's campuses.
