Students at the University's School of Medicine are organizing a road race to benefit the South Park Inn Medical Clinic in Hartford. The race will be held on Saturday, September 12, at 10 a.m., starting at the Health Center's Dowling North Building. The route is about 2.5 miles on campus grounds. Participants may either walk or run. The pre-registration deadline is September 4. Registration on race day begins at 9 a.m. The fee is $10. All pre-registered participants will receive a race T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the top five male and female finishers. To register by mail, send your name, address, phone number, and a check payable to South Park Benefit Road Race, to South Park Benefit Road Race, UConn Health Center, c/o Medical Student Affairs Office, 263 Farmington Ave., Farmington, CT 06030-1905, or call (860) 679-8055 for a registration form or more information. The race is sponsored by People's Bank, Fleet Bank, Work Out World (WOW!), Sodexho Marriott Services, Bruegger's Bagels, Harry's Pizza, and Murphy and Scarletti's Pasta, Grill & Bar. Race organizers are second-year medical students Jason Ryan, Jennifer Botte and Jeff Spencer. The South Park Inn Medical Clinic was founded and is staffed by students from the School of Medicine. The clinic offers free health care to residents of the South Park Inn's homeless shelter and transitional living program. About two-thirds of all current medical students participate in the clinic. The students open the clinic twice a week for 50 weeks of the year and see approximately 20 patients each week. Oversight is provided by about 20 physicians, and pharmaceutical companies donate many supplies. |
