University community welcomes new faculty members to campus
August 31, 1998

This fall the University again welcomes an outstanding group of new faculty and staff, including 85 new full-time faculty members.

"We're delighted that they're joining the University at such an exciting and important time in its history," says Mark Emmert, chancellor. "They come here at a point in time when UConn is making historic strides as it marches toward becoming a world-class University."

Emmert says the swell of faculty appointments was made possible by both the University's and the state's early retirement incentive, which resulted in a large number of retirees last year.

"This has enabled us to bring in a significant cohort of people who'll be able to influence the University for the next 30 years," he says.

Emmert says the new faculty are of the highest quality and are a diverse group. "In every case, the search committees understood how serious we are in advancing diversity at this institution, and they cast their nets broadly," he says. "The University's highest priority is attracting and retaining top quality students and faculty."
