Women's polo team are national champs again
May 11, 1998

The UConn women's polo team has won the National Intercollegiate Polo Championship for the third consecutive year.

The team defeated the University of Virginia 26 to 9 in the semifinals and Cornell University in the final game, 24 to 10.

The men's team lost to Texas A&M University, the team that eventually won the men's national championship.

The UConn women's polo team first came into national prominence in 1995, after winning the title of Women's Reserve National Intercollegiate Polo Champions. The UConn women were the only intercollegiate polo team - men or women - in the 1997-98 season with a perfect record of 16 wins, no losses, says James Dinger, associate professor of animal science and coach of the women's polo team.

"The UConn women's polo team is the best team in the nation," he says. "It will be a long time before another team as talented as this one will come along."
