of the activities to be held at the University during Sexual
Assault Awareness Month in April. Events are sponsored by the
UConn Women's Center and the Violence Against Women Prevention

- April 1 - Film. Ordinary Rape.
Examination of the misconceptions
surrounding date rape in the United States, through interviews
with college students, journalists, criminologists, psychologists,
lawyers, police and physicians. 7 p.m., Women's Center lounge.
- April 6, 7, 8 and 9 - Quilt Making.
Students, faculty and staff
may design quilt patches to create a sexual assault survivors
quilt. 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Student Union lobby. Co-sponsored by North
Campus Area Council, Department of Residential Life, Graduate
Student Senate, Delta Zeta and the Panhellenic Council.
- April 7, 14, 21 and 28 - Self-Defense Workshops
. Co-sponsored
with North Campus Area Council, Department of Residential Life,
Delta Zeta and the Panhellenic Council. 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.,
McConaughy Hall multi-purpose room, North Campus.
- April 8 - Button Distribution. Every 46 seconds
an adult woman
is forcibly raped in the United States. Pick up a button at the
Women's Center and help raise awareness to end violence against
women. Co-sponsored by North Campus Area Council, Department
of Residential Life, Delta Zeta and the Panhellenic Council.
- April 8 - Lecture: The Adrienne Ortolano Story.
In June 1997,
Adrienne Ortolano, Glamour Magazine's Woman of the
Year, went
public as one of the victims of Alex Kelly. She will share her
story, which began 11 years ago. 7 p.m., Jorgensen Gallery. Co-sponsored
by the Undergraduate Student Government, Department of Residential
Life, UConn Police Department, North Campus Area Council, Graduate
Student Senate, Delta Zeta and the Panhellenic Council.
- April 13 - Discussion: Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse.
Greg Secord,
counselor and group facilitator at the Hartford YWCA, will discuss
the issues of being a male sexual assault survivor. 7 p.m., Room
380, Student Union. Co-sponsored by the Undergraduate Student
Government, Department of Residential Life, Graduate Student
Senate, Delta Zeta and the Panhellenic Council.
- April 14 - Discussion. The Politics of Incest:
Personal and Political.
Maria Tramontozzi, survivor, educator and clinician, will discuss
incest, focusing on the personal, psychological, political and
social effects. Information will be provided for healing and
activism. 7 p.m., Room 380, Student Union. Co-sponsored by the
Graduate Student Senate, Delta Zeta, Panhellenic Council and
the Department of Residential Life.
- April 15 - Take Back the Night March.
Includes student speakers
who were victims of sexual assault and others who want to voice
their concerns about violence against women. 7 p.m., Student
Union Mall. Co-sponsored by the Graduate Student Senate, Delta
Zeta, Panhellenic Council, North Campus Area Council and the
Department of Residential Life.
- April 16 - The Day of Healing. Survivors and
secondary survivors
of incest join together in a healing process. Singer and song-writer
Susan DeSousa will perform and award-winning writer and incest
survivor Sadia Carone will read from her book, Circle Words.
6 p.m. Women's Center lounge. Co-sponsored by the Graduate Student
Senate, Department of Residential Life, Undergraduate Student
Government, North Campus Area Council, Delta Zeta and Panhellenic
Council.
- April 21 - Counseling Significant Others and Secondary Survivors.
Scott Stevens from Northeast Clinical Specialists will address
the needs of secondary and tertiary victims of sexual abuse.

Student Senate, Department of Residential Life, Delta Zeta and
the Panhellenic Council.
- April 29 - Film. Proceed with Caution!
Women are increasingly
the targets of violence and must seek ways to protect themselves.
Common sense precautions will be emphasized. Crime experts, a
locksmith, a self-defense instructor and police offer specific
guidelines. 7 p.m., Women's Center lounge.
