Articles
Richard Hiskes, Political Science, "Relearning the Risks of Democracy," in The Good Society, Vol. 7, No. 2, Summer 1997. The article will also be published in Democracy, Risk and Community (Oxford University Press, 1998).

Awards
The Center for Community Outreach has received an award from the Easter Seal Center of Southeastern Connecticut for outstanding contributions to people with disabilities, for developing an on-campus program where UConn students meet weekly with clients from the Easter Seal community experience program.

Myra Marx Ferree, Sociology, has received an award for outstanding feminist mentoring from Sociologists for Women in Society, an international organization of more than 1,000 social scientists.

Zbigniew Witczak, Pharmacy, is the recipient of the 1997 John S. Burlew award from the American Chemical Society, Connecticut Valley Section. The award recognizes excellence in research. Witczak received the award for his contribution to carbohydrate chemistry.

Presentations
Larry Bowman, Political Science, gave a lecture on "Joshua Slocum: American Navigator and Author," in Mauritius. The talk marked the centenary of Slocum's visit to Mauritius and was sponsored by the English Speaking Union, the United States Information Agency, and the University of Mauritius.

Debra Kendall, Molecular and Cell Biology, gave a lecture on "Identification of a Sequence Motif that Confers SecB Dependence on a SecB-Independent Secretory Protein," at an international conference on "Protein Targeting: Protein Translocation Across Cellular Membranes," sponsored by the European Science Foundation, in Albufeira, Portugal, October 22-27.
