UConn senior wins first Barbara Kaplan scholarship
August 29, 1997 Richard A. Spellman, a senior in the cytogenetics program, has received the Barbara J. Kaplan Scholarship. It is the first time the scholarship has been awarded. Spellman was selected from a national pool of applicants on the basis of outstanding scholastic performance, evidence of potential contribution to the profession of cytogenetics or diagnostic molecular genetics, volunteer work, and initiative. He received the award at the annual meeting of the Association of Genetic Technologists in Portland, Ore., this summer. The $1,000 scholarship is sponsored by Sigma Chemical Co. and is applied toward the student's tuition. It is named in honor of Barbara J. Kaplan, editor-in-chief of Applied Cytogenetics for 17 years.
