Athletics hires compliance officer
March 28, 1997

The University has hired an assistant director of athletics for compliance who brings to Storrs an extensive background in NCAA rules, agent-related issues and Division I-A football.

William P. Shults previously was assistant director for compliance/student services at Florida State. He will begin his new job April 7.

"Bill comes to Connecticut superbly qualified to direct our NCAA compliance program," said Lew Perkins, director of athletics. "He has experienced the application of NCAA rules as a collegiate student-athlete, as a Division I head coach and for the past seven years as a compliance officer at a Division I-A institution. Nationally, Bill is highly regarded in his area of expertise and because he's returning to his roots here in Connecticut, it will allow him to make a very smooth transition into this very important post within our athletics program."

In addition to his career at Florida State, Shults has served as compliance coordinator for the College Swim Coaches Association of America. He is a 1976 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he was a collegiate swimmer. He has a master's degree in education administration from LaSalle University.

He began his professional career as a physical education instructor at Trinity College, where he also was head coach of water polo and assistant coach of men's and women's swimming and diving. He moved on to assistant coach positions at New Hampshire and Florida State.

His hiring concluded a search that began last fall, when Noreen Morris left UConn to become compliance coordinator at Conference USA.
