CAMPUS CHRONICLES and NEWS MAKERS

CHRONICLES:
Horticulture Club students received three crystal bowls at the 16th annual Hartford Flower Show on February 22. This year's exhibit, "Home Gardens and More" received awards for the best student presentation, best vegetable garden and best use of color in a design. The display highlighted some of the many different ways to decorate a back yard for a Fourth of July garden party with red, white and blue annual and herbaceous flower beds, container plantings and hanging baskets.

Otha Brown, director of the Waterbury campus, was inducted into the Central State University Hall of Fame in Wilberforce, Ohio. He is a 1952 graduate.

NEWSMAKERS:
Chandra Roychoudhuri, director of the Photonics Research Center, was featured in two articles about photonics: one in the Journal Inquirer of Manchester and another in the New Haven Register ... Faquir Jain, professor of electrical and systems engineering, also was quoted in the Register article about his work with Raytheon to develop photonic radar ... Dietician Valerie Duffy was interviewed by The New York Times about taste buds and their reaction to fat ... Willena Price, director of the African-American Cultural Center, spoke to the Chronicle of Willimantic about Ebonics ... Ken Dautrich, assistant professor of political science, commented on Rowland's proposed budget cuts in The Day of New London ... Christine Dailey, associate head coach of the women's basketball team, was profiled in the Connecticut section of The New York Times ... Xiangzhong Yang, associate professor of animal science, commented on cloning in a Hartford Courant article ... Peter Scheifele of the Marine Science and Technology Center on the Avery Point campus was interviewed by the New Haven Register about his research showing that ship noise may be harming rare beluga whales ... The Avery Point campus was profiled in The New York Times ... Glen O'Keefe , director of administrative services, wrote an op-ed commentary in The Hartford Courant about the separation of church and state ... Wayne Worcester, professor of journalism, talked to The Hartford Courant about entertainment in television news ... John C. Brittain, professor of law, wrote an op-ed commentary in The Hartford Courant about school choice ... David Pesci, a University relations associate in the Office of Communications, is earning publicity about his novel, Amistad. He has been featured on National Public Radio's All Things Considered and in The Hartford Courant, Journal Inquirer of Manchester, Newport (R.I.) Daily News, Providence Journal-Bulletin and the Middlesex Daily News in Massachusetts.
